2017 Basket Pressed Merlot

This traditional French variety has found a home nestled on the 'right bank' of the creek, opposite the century old Block 6 vines.

Often providing supple red and black berried fruits and a round mouth feel to blends with Cabernet, Merlot on it's own produces a medium bodied wine with a long, silky finish. A variety not done any favours by a particular Hollywood movie, our Merlot continues to surprise many who have forgotten just how good this variety can be.

These vines are planted on the Eastern bank of the creek next to the Cabernet. Soils are a mixture of rich alluvial clay loam and lighter sandy loam with underlying geology consisting of calcareous sandstone and limestone. The fruit was open fermented and hand plunged for 14 days on skins, prior to traditional basket pressing. The wine then matured for 8 months in French oak barriques.

Vintage 2017 was set up by wonderful winter and spring rainfall, being the wettest season since 1992. This rain gave the soils and entire eco-system a much-needed flush after the dry summers of 2015 and 2016. Bud-burst was late but flowering conditions were mild and fruit set was quite good. Because of the moderate summer temperatures vine canopies thrived with little stress compared to most years. The final ripening period was warm with cold nights, very favourable conditions for flavour development. Setting the scene for an outstanding high-quality vintage.

On the 22nd March we harvested 8.93 tonnes of Merlot.

Colour: Deep crimson.

Nose: Violets, tomato leaf, boysenberry and musk.

Palate: Bursting with fresh red berry fruits, an earthy mid palate, supple acidity followed by fine chalky tannins. A fresh and vibrant Merlot with great poise and balance!

We highly recommend decanting prior to serving. A great match with any lamb dish.
