Grenache has long been held in high regard in McLaren Vale as a versatile variety wonderfully suited to the Vale's coastal climate. A soft, elegant wine that pairs beautifully with food our Grenache is rapidly becoming a firm favourite amongst our supporters.
Planted on the Eastern facing slope below the winery, our Grenache enjoys a sunny aspect, often tempered by a cooling afternoon breeze. Fermented in the original open top fermenters and basket pressed, the Grenache spends a short time in larger, older French oak barrels.
The result is an elegant, juicy Grenache in a bright and expressive style. Gentle tannins and a fleshy palate give a soft and generous mouth feel. This old timer of the Vale is enjoying it's time back in the spot light.
Vintage 2017 was set up by wonderful winter and spring rainfall, being the wettest season since 1992. This rain gave the soils and entire eco-system a much needed flush after the dry summers of 2015 and 2016. Bud-burst was late but flowering conditions were mild and fruit set was quite good. Because of the mild summer temperatures vine canopies thrived with little stress compared to most years. The final ripening period was warm with cold nights, very favourable conditions for flavor development. Setting the scene for an outstanding high quality vintage.
Soils are shallow red sandy loam over quartz gravel and ironstone. 10.15tonnes of Grenache grapes were hand harvested on the 12th April. Grapes were open fermented and hand plunged for 9 days on skins, prior to traditional basket pressing. The wine matured a further 8 months in aged French oak puncheons.
Colour: Bright crimson.
Nose: Pretty aromatic notes of rose petal and dark cherry.
