Hillside Shiraz

07_hillside.jpg

2007 Hillside Shiraz     $40.00

2007 KAY BROTHERS AMERY HILLSIDE SHIRAZ
The “Hillside” vineyard Shiraz grapes were picked in February 2007, during the cool of the early morning and traditionally processed with open fermentation and basket pressing. Matured in a combination of American and Eastern European oak barrels for 28 months prior to bottling on the 20th of January 2010.
Colour: Black Cherry, Nose: Briary plus,
rhubarb, liquorice, prosciutto and a healthy serve of star anise. Palate: A very complex, full bodied, tight, textured wine. The rich, ripe, concentrated fruit flavours are superbly balanced by the fine grape tannins. With execptional depth and structure this is a wine that will age surperbly for at least 10 years and decanting is essential to show the wine at its best.

2008 Hillside Shiraz     $40.00

Trophy for the Best Shiraz between $25 and $50. 2010 McLaren Vale Wineshow

Colour: Deep ink/purple.
Nose: Initially the nose is dominated by bright rich black mulberries, Satsuma plum and dark chocolate. A swirl of the glass also reveals some cinnamon, white pepper and a trace of mint.
Palate: The weight and power from the rich primary fruit has been carefully balanced with subtle use of large format American and Eastern European oak 1/3 new, the rest second use and third use. While very approachable at present, the wine is structured such that it will stand the test of time and careful cellaring will reward those with due patience.
Vintage 2008 was very kind to Kay Brothers Amery red wines. All fruit was picked before the “Heatwave”. As a consequence the wines are generous in flavour, blessed with juicy ripe tannins and a sublime natural acidity.
The combination of an ideal growing season and a minimal intervention winemaking philosophy has seen the 2008 Hillside rewarded with a trophy from our peers at the 2010 McLaren Vale Wine Show for the best Shiraz $25-50.

Cuthbert Cabernet

2008 Cuthbert Cabernet     $40.00

2008 KAY BROTHERS AMERY CUTHBERT CABERNET
The 2008 vintage Cuthbert Cabernet is the second release of this commemorative wine. Colin Kay, continuing the family winemaking tradition, has produced this delightful McLaren Vale Cabernet Sauvignon in honour of this father Cuthbert. Cuthbert “Cud” Kay, the eldest son of Herbert Kay, was born at Amery on the 16th June 1914, 24 years after Herbert and his brother Frederick founded the Kay Brothers Amery Vineyards and Winery. Apart from service in the Second Word War, and spending most Sundays on the golf course, Cud’s life was devoted to making rich, full-bodied Amery red wines – the style he always enjoyed.
Harvested on the 11th March 2008, the grapes were traditionally processed (open fermented and basket pressed) with extended post fermentation maceration. The wine was matured for 2 years in new Hungarian and Bulgarian Oak barrels.
A rich, dark, brooding Cabernet of awsome length, dept and weight. The combination of eucalypt and blackberry/mulberry fruits are in complete harmony with the sweet cigar-box characters and ripe, juicy tannins.
Bottled in July 2010 this wine will continue to develop in the bottle for many years with careful cellaring. Decanting is recommended an hour or two before enjoying.

2010 Viognier     $22.00

2010 AMERY VIOGNIER
Medium-Full intensity. Ripe peach, nectarine and honeydew melon with a healthy serve of fresh cream and a hint of cinnamon on the nose. A rich round mouth feel. Stone fruits predominately with a lychee lift on the finish. Subtle vanillin oak influence accentuates the creamy mouth feel (20% of blend was barrel fermented in second-use French oak, lees stirred and under went a partial malo-lactic fermentation). The fruit/juice was oxidatively handled to create a richer mouth-feel and soften the phenolics on the finish. To that end no fining agents were used in the winemaking process. 100% estate grown & made.

Moscato

2010 Moscato     $22.00

The Muscat Blanc (Frontignac) grapes were handpicked on the 8th February 2010. The fermentation process was stopped early to keep the natural grape sugars, resulting in a low alcohol of 6% alc/vol. To retain the deliciously fresh, fruity grape flavours the Moscato was bottled early (22nd March 2010) under stainless steel champagne crown seals.
Colour: Pale Straw. Nose: A combination of ripe apples, Muscat grapes, limes and honeysuckle. Palate: A light, bright, spritzy style with delicious flavours of fresh ripe, crisp apples and lime/citrus fruits with a lingering Muscat grape sweetness. Refreshing and playful with an excellent balance between fruit and acid. Best served icy cold and enjoyed as a young wine.
