Sarah Kay

Sarah painted eight volumes of botanical studies these images have been taken from the album, Flowers Gathered in our Wanderings, painted while Sarah was trevelling in Europe in 1878. 

We have taken six images and have reproduced them in a boxed card set available for purchase in cellar door and on line.

    • In 1849, at the age of twenty, Sarah Catcheside emigrated to South Australia from Newcastle on Tyne. William Kay, also twenty, travelled on the same ship, the Sea Queen. Sarah and William married at Blakiston near Adelaide in 1853.

      Sarah bore eleven children, eight of whom survived to adulthood. She painted numerous botanical studies and gave a volume of paintings to each of her children.

      Severl of Sarah's botanical studies and one of her albums are held in the collection of the Art Gallery of South Australia.

      Two of Sarah's and William's sons, Herbert and Frederick, established Kay Brothers Amery Vineyards and Winery at McLaren Vale in 1891 and thier great grandson Colin Kay is the current winemaker.
