2015 Block 6 Shiraz

NEW VINTAGE
$95.00 inc GST

This is the 31st release of our flagship wine, handpicked from 123 year old vines.

Long held in high esteem as one of McLaren Vale’s finest Shiraz plantings, Block 6 Shiraz continues the tradition at Kay Brothers of producing full bodied red wines that have the grace and pedigree to age for decades. Handpicked and fermented in the original open top fermenters, Block 6 Shiraz is a wine of great strength, deep complexity and amazing vibrancy.

3.45 tonnes harvested by hand on the 16th of February. The grapes were crushed, de-stemmed and plunged twice daily while spending 14 days on skins in our traditional open fermenters. The wine was then basket pressed and matured for 23 months in 40% new French and American oak puncheons.

The 2015 vintage growing season began with an extremely dry and warm spring. Flowering conditions were excellent therefore optimising fruit set. Mild but dry conditions continued in early summer until mid-January, when we received 33 mm of much welcome rain. The rain freshened canopies and kick started veraison. The final ripening period was warm but with cool nights and no extended heat waves, full flavour ripeness and nice natural acidity levels were preserved.

Because of the lack of growing season rainfall block 6 delivered one of the smallest crops on record, with 3.45 tonnes harvested by hand on the 16th of February. The grapes were crushed, de-stemmed and plunged twice daily while spending 14 days on skins in our traditional open fermenters. The wine was then basket pressed and matured for 23 months in 40 % new French and American oak puncheons. Bottled in February 2017.

Colour: Deep crimson.

Nose: Intense aromas of boysenberry, marzipan, cigar box and a hint of cedar.

Palate: Layers of dark cherries, spicy pepper and earth. Followed by slowly building fine-grained graphite like tannins. Rich and concentrated with power and finesse.
